Local Women Unite to Build a Dream for Julie

The 2023 Women Build is a celebration of resilience, community, and the boundless possibilities that arise when people join forces to make dreams come true.

Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity's 2023 Women Build became a pillar of strength for homebuyer, Julie, during many moments of doubt and difficulty. Local women organized fundraisers, volunteered on construction sites, and supported Julie on her dream to homeownership for over a year.

Julie faces the challenges of Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome, which involves muscle weakness and fatigue. She embarked on a remarkable journey towards homeownership in 2022. Julie has lived in the Toledo area since 2002, navigating life independently with the assistance of nursing services. Her dream of having a place to call her own seemed distant, but with the support of the local women in her community and the unwavering commitment of Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity, that dream became a reality on February 6, 2024. She bought and was given the keys to her own home.

Over the last year, Julie volunteered on the build site, in ReStore, and attended monthly education classes on her journey to homeownership.  Julie's home is unique because Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity in partnership with The Ability Center built a home tailored to her unique needs. This includes many universal design standards including lower countertops, step-free entries, and wide doorways.

The challenges Julie faced in her previous living situation, from nonsmoking policy violations to issues with management and neighbors, were substantial. Yet, her determination to overcome these obstacles and the generosity of the community created a powerful force for positive change. Julie's story serves as a testament to the impact we can have when we come together to uplift one another.

On February 6, Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity hosted a Home Dedication Ceremony celebration Julie. She was surrounded by friends, volunteers, and the local women who rallied behind her, and as part of the program Julie received the keys to her new home.

Our mission to build homes, communities, and hope, Julie inspires us all. Together, we can create a world where everyone has a decent place to call home.
