Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity is thrilled to announce the exciting addition of two accomplished individuals to our Board of Trustees. Erin Baker, from theToledo Lucas County Public Library, and Amanda Nelson, representing Fortune Brands Innovations, Inc., have joined our mission-driven Board, bringing a wealth of experience, passion, and dedication to the cause of affordable housing.

Meet Erin Baker / Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion /Toledo Lucas County Public Library:

Q: What inspired you to join Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity's Board of Directors?

A: I was inspired to join Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity's Board of Directors by the organization's longstanding commitment to providing safe and affordable housing. The grassroots origins of the group, formed by community and congregational volunteers in 1988, reflect a genuine passion for making a positive impact on people's lives. The continuous efforts to rehab homes and build new ones, along with the addition of initiatives like ReStore and Women Build, showcase a dedication to addressing housing challenges comprehensively.

Furthermore, the organization's global reach through tithe contributions to developing countries such as Ethiopia, Haiti, and Guatemala resonated with me. This global perspective reflects a commitment to the fundamental belief that everyone, regardless of location, deserves the opportunity to live in safe and decent housing.

Q: What aspects of our mission resonate with you the most?

A: What resonates with me most about Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity's mission is the unwavering focus on ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to own and live in safe and affordable housing. The organization's commitment to building homes, communities, and hope aligns with a broader vision of creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live. This inclusive approach, demonstrated through the dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion, is evident in the organization's statement about creating spaces of belonging for all individuals, without barriers. I believe that providing equal access and opportunities to participate in building homes fosters a sense of community and contributes to a more just and compassionate society.

Q: What does home mean to you?

A: To me, home signifies more than just a physical space; it is a place of safety, belonging, and comfort. Home is where individuals and families can thrive, create memories, and build a foundation for a better future. Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity's mission to put God's love into action resonates with my belief that a decent place to live is a fundamental right that should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their circumstances. Home, in its truest sense, is a sanctuary that provides stability and the opportunity for individuals and families to pursue their dreams.

In summary, my decision to join the Board of Directors is rooted in a shared commitment to Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity's mission of creating spaces of belonging and ensuring that everyone has a place to call home.
